Movie Review : The secret truth about family events is that unless you’re the guest of honor, they usually last much too long. So it is with this good-natured documentary, which feels stretched out at a mere 73 minutes. But anyone who grew up dancing to “Hava Nagila” at weddings and bar mitzvahs may be interested to learn the song’s origins.
Director Roberta Grossman and writer Sophie Sartain bring a lighthearted sense of humor to their task, which is twofold: first, to explore the history of the titular folk song, and second, to keep us interested while doing so. They’re relatively successful at both, deftly linking the song to the experience of the Jewish diaspora.
There are occasional insights from interviews with artists like Harry Belafonte and Regina Spektor, and some of the historical footage is fascinating, including a montage of international renditions of this surprisingly universal tune.
While the filmmakers never quite make the case that their chosen melody deserves its own full-length film, they do ensure that you’ll leave the theater happily humming it.
