Movie Review : Saw this last night at a local theater; Just a note: I was the ONLY, yes the ONLY person in the theater! I was at the 9:35 show on Friday night in Lancaster OH and I guess everybody in town had already seen it. So to me it was like I was getting a PRIVATE showing! Awesome....
Anyways, suffice it to say that it's really great to see Dwayne Johnson in a role that does rely entirely on action and muscles. He presents himself very well as a normal, everyday, BUSY, divorced father who loves his son, but is caught between running his business and personal life. When his son makes a stupid decision to 'help' a drug-selling friend, he gets caught up in the nightmare of the Federal Justice System. "John" just wants to help his son, and rightfully feels the 'punishment' far overshadows the crime, and decides to help his son.
It's also nice to see Susan Sarandon in a role where she is not a total, well, you know. Sure, she's a federal prosecutor caught up in an election campaign, and she's blinded (as are many others) to the end result of what these laws are really supposed to do. And she changes the goal line for John a time or two, but he hangs in there and completes his task.
Looking at the laws, it's easy to see WHY they are as they are; but when a very naive kid gets involved, they 'think' that he will lead them to the bigger fish. And he honestly cannot do that as he's just person who made one bad choice. So he either has to fabricate and lie to get the 'next' person, who in turn, may have to do the same....so when he decides it's not worth it to lie to save himself, he goes to prison and endures the hardship. This is true example of the ends NOT justifying the means.
Dwayne Johnson accurately plays "John" as a fish out of water, choking fast.....but he's determined to save his son. Anyways, enough said. The movie is very well done. I found it to be very enjoyable. Mr. Johnson can ACT as well as SMILE. The supporting cast gives a great performance as well.
